Humphries

/ˈhʌmfriz/ (say 'humfreez)

noun
(John) Barry, born 1934, Australian actor and writer of satirical drama; known for the creation of characters such as Dame Edna Everage, played on stage by himself, and the comic-strip, later film, character Barry McKenzie (`Bazza').
Barry Humphries was born and educated in Melbourne. His satirical shows include characters based on Australian `types', the most famous being Dame Edna Everage, housewife superstar, who debuted in 1955, and Australia's cultural ambassador-at-large Sir Les Paterson who first appeared in 1974. The Adventures of Barry McKenzie, a comic strip written by Humphries, appeared in the British magazine Private Eye from 1963 to 1974 and in 1972 he wrote the screenplay for the film of the same name, in which he appeared as Edna Everage. He has also published numerous books, including his autobiography More Please (1992). Humphries's work has been popular in both Australia and England, and on Broadway, especially his performances as Dame Edna. He made his farewell tour playing Dame Edna in 2012. He was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 1982.
